This is the BEST Tantalus we have come across in all the years of selling fine antique boxes. This Tantalus or Liquor decanter box is made from solid French walnut with heavy brass adornment. This box even has its original rich old patina, key and decorative inside fabric. There is room inside for four glasses and a cut or blown glass decanter. The decanter and glasses we are selling with it fit but are not original too the piece. The box measures 12 and one quarter inches wide by 12 inches high and 8 and one quarter inches deep. The area for each glass is two inches wide and the decanter area is 3 and one half inches wide. This Tantalus weighs 17 and one half pounds ! The name tantalus comes from the word tantalize. The first tantalus decanters were made in the mid 1800s in the British Isles.

- - - - - - - - - - - - | Early solid brass Dutch storage box c1750 to 1800 Item # 5160 Click HERE to inquire about this item RARE early heavy solid brass Dutch storage box c1750 to 1800. See "The Brass Book" by Peter, Nancy and Herbert Schiffer c1978 page 117 to see similar boxes with this shape and design. This box measures 10 and one half inches wide by 5 and one half inches deep and 3 and one half inches high. This early solid brass box has an old repair on its base which we show in the pictures provided. We believe the repair was made when the box was first cast because it is hand forged into the base. Sometimes the molds would break or the metal would be to thin in an area. There also is a very small round solder repair to a tiny hole in the lid.The box is almost an eighth inch thick. Weighs 4.8 lbs.
